The GIS Lab is part of the Sylviculture and Management Division. It allows
students to practice photomapping, remote sensing and geographic information
system. The laboratory was created in 1988 and known as the Photo-mapping
Laboratory, gradually changed to be the Remote Sensing Laboratory and finally
became as the GIS Lab. The practical exercises on the use of materials and
software for geographic information exploitation complement the forest training
of the students. The GIS, effectively, is a useful tool for:
- the completion of their memoir (related to natural resource and terroir
management)
- the natural resource management,
- the environmental impact surveys,
- the risk analysis for a given terroir, locality or region in order to set a
management or even a development plan.
The GIS laboratory is specialized in the management and analysis of spatial
information. Its skills include (i) Photo-mapping, (ii) satellite image
processing (iii) GIS (iv) mapdigitizing. Its activities are:

1. Training
- training of engineer students
- tutoring of engineer, Master memoirs and Thesis,
- retraining sessions for professionals and partners
2. Research in
- Forestry : forest zoning and mapping, forest and land use dynamics
survey, management plan implementation
- Ecology : delimitation of threatened faunistic species habitat
- Tourism : identification of ecologic investment areas
- Water and soil management : watershed management
- Environment : environmental impact surveys
- Development : vulnerability analyses and risk
forecasting
